ABOUT THE OWNER
Theresa D. Varela is an award-winning graphic designer, illustrator and lettering artist living in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She has been drawing and painting from the time she can remember. Letters, in particular, have enchanted her from first wanting to emulate her mother’s cursive handwriting and then finding a Speedball textbook at the library. She received a calligraphy kit at the age of 11 and never looked back!
Theresa is a member of IAMPETH, WCG, MassScribes and is a past President of her local calligraphy guild, Escribiente. She is a 2006 Gold ADDY award winner for logo design and has appeared in numerous publications, including Bound & Lettered, Paper & Ink Arts and The Weekly Alibi. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from The Art Center Design College (Now known as SUVA), and also attended FIDM in Los Angeles. Theresa is the only person in New Mexico certified to teach American Cursive Handwriting, a title bestowed on her in October of 2019 by Crown Calligraphy and Master Penman Michael Sull in Denver, Colorado. Theresa penned the official invitations for New Mexico Governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham for her first term in office and has also worked on other projects for books and television.
Theresa has always been a creative and seeks to add beauty to our world through her art. Her other creative endeavors include makeup artistry, painting motorcycles, teaching calligraphy, cursive handwriting and creative lettering, painting landscapes, maps and wildlife as well as large scale murals and engraving.
In 2020 Theresa began a new creative outlet through photography and is the owner of Bella Reina Beauty & Boudoir Photography. In 2024 Theresa will also be coming full circle with designing clothing, which was her childhood dream!

Silver Swirl Studios is primarily a calligraphy, hand lettering and illustration studio. We are also fully capable of handling your graphic design needs from concept, to logo design and branding and designing promotional materials. Whatever the project is, we take pride in producing unique and carefully crafted designs.
Our business hours are by appointment only. We are happy to correspond with you Monday - Friday from 12pm - 6pm. Because we value our family time, we have limited availability on Saturdays, and do not accept appointments or answer emails on Sundays. We will return your emails and phone calls the first thing on Monday! We are available for local work, and also can ship anywhere in the U.S. and select areas internationally.
